Geographic Information System I Cut-to-Length Logging System
Over the years, Bennett Lumber has assembled a state-of-the-art Geographic
Information System (G.I.S.) using ESRI's
ArcInfo and ArcView software. GIS provides
analytical and mapping capabilities which help foresters manage timberlands,
allowing them to track inventory, plan harvests and planting operations, and to
protect special sites. At this time, Bennett's digital mapping project covers almost 6
million acres in Idaho and 1.5 million acres in Washington at a scale of 1:100,000.
Examples of layers implemented into the
project are ownership, roads, hydrography,
stand boundaries, survey corners, contours,
landuse and vegetation. Also included are
digital elevation models, digital orthophotos
and satellite photography coverages.

Bennett's commitment to forestry technology
includes the use of a resource grade Global
Positioning System. Company foresters use
GPS technology to locate property lines,
traverse cutting or planting boundaries,
identifying special sites, and to update the
Geographic Information System databases.
Currently, Bennett owns
Trimble Pro XRS,
GeoExplorer III, and Geo XT
GPS equipment.

Not only does Bennett Lumber produce maps
for in-house use, but they do mapping projects to assist local emergency services. For example, police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances all carry a Latah County Emergency Services Mapbook which was produced at Bennett Lumber Products.
