Sustainable Forestry Initiative I Logger Education I Visual Quality
Healthy forests are needed not only by fish and wildlife, they are essential for the
long term viability of the timber industry. In the Spring of 2000, Bennett Lumber
Products enrolled to participate in the
Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program.
The SFI program was developed by the American Forest and Paper Association to
help interested organizations implement sustainable
forestry and set forth measures by which customers,
conservation groups or members of the public may
monitor and evaluate the organization's commitment
to its principles.

In 2000, an independent multi-stakeholder Sustainable Forestry Board (SFB) was
established with the full responsibility of managing the SFI program standard and
certification procedures and SFI program compliance. As of January of 2007 all SFI
program elements are being directed by a new fully independent non-profit
organization, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc. The new SFI is governed by an
independent multi-stakeholder Board of Directors comprised of 15 members, two-
thirds of whom are from outside interest groups such as environmental and
conservation groups.
